Moving Forward with the Revised SSHG Curriculum
What are the key ideas that we I need to
be aware of?
The key ideas are not about major
changes in content. Rather the focus is on more purposefully
teaching students specific inquiry skills and how to apply
the concepts
of thinking in the different subject areas. In this way, the goal is
for students to be doing, geography or history or citizenship
rather than simply learning subject content.
Where can I find the key ideas?
Beyond the SSHG 1-8 document you can use
the SSHG placemats and overview pages to see the key ideas.
How does the document help me as I plan my Social
Studies, Geography, History program?
At the beginning of each grade’s
expectations there is a overview page that includes key information on the
Overall Expectations that must be evaluated, Related Concepts of Thinking for
each OE, Big Ideas, Framing Questions and Sample Spatial Skills Activities
Are there any new resources/supports to support this curriculum?
Publishers have produced materials for purchase and
the Ontario
Elementary Social Studies Teachers Association along with OAGEE
and OHASSTA have produced teaching/learning supports. Find the intermediate
supports at http://intermediateinquiry.blogspot.ca/.
Is there anything extra to support combined grades?
Visit the OESSTA site to see the latest on combined
grades
How can I integrate Social Justice?
One approach is to use the CRP module created by OESSTA. See the video playlist.
What else can I do to move forward?
Try being involved in OESSTA and participate in the
forum. Frequent the SSHG discussion site on Twitter #ontsshg. We hold bi-weekly
dicussions on Thursday evening at 9 PM focusing on current issues.
